Greek Terracotta Chariot Group Ancient Art & Antiquities    Greek Terracotta Chariot Group Ancient Art & Antiquities

An ancient Hellenistic Greek terracotta statuette of a chariot drawn by two goats. Driving the chariot is a winged male figure wearing a polos cap. With him stands a smaller youth wrapped in a himation.

3rd - 2nd century BC. The iconography of this figure is unusual.

We would expect the group to be Helios and his son Phaëton, but this myth is rather clear in describing the solar chariot as being pulled by horses, not goats. Confer for a similar group with a chariot pulled by roosters: L. Higgins, Catalogue of Greek Terracottas in the British Museum, Vol. GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC AND AS DESCRIBED.
