Here we have an exceptional neolithic Chinese Longshan culture tripod ewer dating to the 3rd to 2nd millenium BC. This is a wonderful example of these extraordinary stoneware ceramics from this culture.
The pitcher has three feet all hollow in the shape of breasts or udders, the handle is crafted in a slight curve from and the spout has two decorative appliques to either side. The form is iconic of artifacts from this period.Chinese neolithic ceramics are of extraordinary accomplishment. The complexity and beauty of the forms and their references to nature but also the technical skill to make these pieces is astonishing of this period almost 5 thousand years ago! At the edge of the spout this astonishing artifact is just 3mm in thickness.
